On a cold, wet and muddy Friday evening I headed over to Sherwood Pines in Nottinghamshire to sample its only red route, the Kitchener Trail.
What a difference a bit of rain makes. Normally a flat fast flowing trail with berms and rollers, and a nice mix of rocks and roots. This time a muddy, gritty energy sapping water filled trail. The 13km took over an hour to complete and my brake pads well and truly ruined.
Over the next few weeks, I'll be breaking the root down section by section so you can see how the trail fares in the rain.
This week is the release of section eight video. Check it out above.
Section eight named ‘Dog Soldiers’ is an all Forest section weaving through the trees and fern covered floor. You pass through a few clearings, over a couple strategically placed small stones and cross one fire road near the end.
It’s around 1km long, which seems an average section length for the Kitchener Trail, and the elevation trend is uphill apart from a straight descent where you can gain some speed (around 1:52 in the film).
On a sunny day this is a lovely section as you get the sun flashing through the trees creating an almost Canadian forest look. That’s when Sherwood Pines is at it’s best. Unfortunately, this evening it was all mud and water. Some big puddles to deal with…
Keep an eye out for next week’s look at the Kitchener trail section nine.
