The 'Short Trail Mountain Biking Series' is a selection of short videos of some of my favourite trails. The first episode of the series takes in the start of the Kitchener Trail red route at Sherwood Pines. Although I think it is now called the Outlaw trail.
The Outlaw Trail flows through the forest linking broadleaf and pine woodland with Heathland and clear fell sites. The trail is virtually 100% single track, the only time your wheels will hit forest road is when you cross one to hit the next section. My video is the first section, but I do also really like the ‘Tornado Alley’ section just after halfway.
The Outlaw trail is rated a red route although with the flatter terrain of Nottinghamshire it isn't as 'red' as many red routes in Northern England and Wales. What the Outlaw trail may lack in elevation, it keeps you flowing with berms and rollers with a nice mix of rocks and roots that give the trail it's red grading. At 13km long, it is fast and a challenge to ride at differing times of the year and is a great introduction to riding single track for riders who want to develop their skills.
Sherwood Pines is located in the heart of Robin Hood land, Nottinghamshire. As well as the Outlaw Trail there is a Family ‘Maid Marion’ Trail which is labelled green. At 6.4km its a lovely steady route for everyone. If you want something a little trickier there is the ‘Robin Hood Adventure’ Trail. A flowing ‘blue’ route at 11.2 km. I drift onto this trail to pick up the snaking section which is nice to ride. There is also an advanced downhill and dirt jump area as well as a kids skills area. Plenty to have a go at.
Even if biking isn’t for you can still make a day of it. You can visit the café, Segway around the wood, take to the trees on the boardwalks, play disc golf or do one of the three walking trails. The young kids love the Gruffalo sculptures, well mine did when they were little. Sherwood Pines also hold some great events from concerts in the park, yoga in the forest and naturally a park run ever Saturday morning.
If you want more information about Sherwood Pines and its Biking opportunities check out some of my other articles. I talk about Sherwood Pines in the mud, I have a whole series about the Outlaw Trail or take a look at one of my Christmas Rides through Sherwood Pines.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
