I often hear, ‘I can't go night riding because lights cost so much’. Well I'm here to tell you they don't have to. I recently purchased a pair of lights for next to nothing and so far, they are spot on.
Purchased cheap at $8.59 which is £6.63. Add in a standard 5000mAh power cell to use as a battery and for £20 you have an excellent light. I get it that the quality of a purpose-built mountain bike night light is probably better but with a range from £100 to £500 you could get five of these lights for the price of the cheapest mtb specific lights.
With the light you get 1600 lumens of brightness to negotiate those trees, definitely enough. To hold the light there is a very strong band that makes fitting extremely easy. It fits the light very snug to the handlebars. The most important thing is that the light doesn’t move when you are travelling over the bumps.
The life of the light as you ride is all dependant on the battery pack you buy. The advertised run time is 4 hours. I tested this out by leaving the light on as long as I could. With the standard 5000mAh power cell I got a minimum of 5 hours. I turned it on at 5pm and returned several times to see the light still as bright. I got to 10pm and gave up as the brightness wasn’t reducing. So, there is definitely a minimum of 5 hours light time. Of an evening I don’t often go out much over 2 hours, so it has never let me down.
Is it waterproof? I hear you say. It states that its waterproof grade is IPX65, whatever that means. I can verify for the purpose of mountain biking it is total suitable. I’ve been out and about in the rain and mud and it still works. I put the battery pack into a sandwich bag in my frame bag and boom it continues to work very well.
The only criticism I have, which isn’t related to light itself, is the length of delivery. It did take a couple of months to turn up. I would recommend buying this in the summer, so you have it for the Autumn and Winter dark nights.
I’m extremely happy with the light. It is cheap but has the quality to provide sufficient light over a long enough time to get out on the bike during the darkest evenings whether dry or in the rain.
