At the start of summer, I took to the bike in the Scottish Highlands and surrounding isles. As part of an organised Mountain Bike holiday, it wasn’t just an off-road bike trip it was a true ‘Mountain’ bike adventure. I took loads of photos but here are a few of my favourites.
The first day was a group introduction, briefing and then a short blast from Balmacara on the edge of Loch Alsh. Our guide kept emphasising not to focus on distance whilst in the Highlands but more on time. I can see why as an hour’s ride in the midlands is more a 5-hour ride in the Highlands.
This was the first view of the Isle of Skye, specifically the Southwest end of the isle.
It was challenging to get used the trails, made of rocks, with steep short inclines and declines, and constant ‘water bars’ to jump over. Water bars are blocks of rock with a gap between to allow the water the run down to the valley. Catch them wrong and it’s almost a guaranteed puncture. Nothing like we have at home.
By the end of the ride, I’d nearly adapted. As you can see great views over the trail.
After the ride it was nice easy evening in the lovely village of Plockton with it’s glistening shoreline on Loch Carron. The food, drink and views were awesome.
All I can say is roll on the rest of the trip. If day one was anything to go by then we are in for a treat.
